Support for the pressures you carry—at every stage of life

Many men are used to pushing through. Staying productive. Keeping difficult thoughts to themselves. Over time, that can create a quiet sense of pressure—feeling stuck in patterns you can’t quite explain, or reacting more strongly than a situation seems to call for.

At Marsh Psychotherapy, we offer a space where you can slow down, reflect, and begin to understand yourself more deeply. Our role is to help you make sense of what’s happening beneath the surface—with compassion and curiosity—so that real, lasting change can take place.

Seeking therapy isn’t a sign of weakness.
It’s a decision to take your inner life seriously.

The Pressures Men Carry

Many men grow up with clear, often unspoken expectations:

  • Be strong
  • Be independent
  • Provide
  • Don’t show too much emotion
  • Handle it yourself

These messages can shape how you cope, relate, and even understand your own feelings. They can also make it harder to recognize when stress, sadness, or anger are asking for attention.

In therapy, we look at how these societal pressures and your personal history have shaped the way you move through the world.

Common Concerns by Life Stage

In early adulthood, many men feel pressure to establish themselves quickly.

Common concerns include:

  • Career uncertainty or intense work demands
  • Financial stress
  • Dating struggles or fear of vulnerability
  • Questions about masculinity and identity
  • Sexual performance anxiety
  • Exploring or affirming LGBTQIA+ identity

You may look “fine” on the outside but feel uncertain, disconnected, or behind internally. Therapy can help you understand what’s fueling that pressure and clarify what actually matters to you.

Midlife often brings expanded responsibility—at work and at home.

Men in this stage may struggle with:

  • Career burnout or feeling trapped
  • Marital or long-term relationship tension
  • Parenting stress
  • Emotional distance from partners
  • Anger or irritability that feels difficult to control
  • A quiet sense of dissatisfaction

Sometimes anger becomes the only emotion that feels accessible. Together, we can look at what that anger might be protecting—grief, fear, disappointment, or unmet needs.

Understanding these layers often softens reactivity and improves communication in meaningful ways.

Later stages of life can bring major shifts:

  • Retirement or career transitions
  • Health concerns
  • Empty nest adjustments
  • Loss of loved ones
  • Questions about legacy and purpose

These changes can stir up anxiety, regret, or sadness that’s been long avoided. Therapy offers space to process these transitions and reorient toward what feels meaningful now.

Our Approach to Therapy

Our work is grounded in a psychodynamic approach. That means we’re not just focused on symptom relief, but on understanding how your past experiences, early relationships, and unconscious beliefs continue to influence your life today.

Together, we explore:

  • Recurring relationship patterns
  • Emotional reactions that feel “out of proportion”
  • Internal conflicts between who you are and who you think you should be
  • The roots of anger, withdrawal, or perfectionism

This isn’t about quick fixes or surface-level advice. It’s about developing greater self-awareness so you can make choices with more freedom—and feel less driven by old patterns.

Featured Men’s Therapist

Meet Joe Evangelisti

Joe Evangelisti, LCSW

Therapy is not always easy for men, as it goes against the way many of us were raised, to conceal emotions and not be vulnerable. I am passionate about working with other men to address things like difficulties expressing yourself, understanding and being understood by others, or feeling stuck in life.

Many of my clients have never been in therapy before, or have even had bad experiences in therapy in the past. I don’t presume any level of knowledge on your part, but rather start with wherever you are to get to wherever you want to go. Therapy can feel intimidating, so I hope to create a supportive atmosphere where you are respected and heard.

I work with other men individually on issues like depression, anxiety, stress, or relationship problems. I also offer specialized treatment for working with OCD and PTSD, whether you have a past diagnosis or simply suspect you might we can discuss further and see what may be helpful for you.

I have experience working with men from a wide range of backgrounds, from young adults to seniors, veterans, college students, and many different cultures. I work with a lot of trans and queer men and have taken training in LGBTQ affirming CBT from Yale in order to provide the most helpful treatment. I enjoy helping other men figure out how they want to be in the world and how they relate to their identity.

Taking the First Step

If you’ve been carrying stress, anger, or uncertainty quietly for a long time, you don’t have to continue doing it alone.

Therapy is not about abandoning strength—it’s about expanding it. It’s about understanding yourself more fully so that you’re less reactive, less stuck, and more intentional in how you live and relate.

If you’re ready to slow down, reflect, and begin that process, Marsh Psychotherapy is here to support you.
